'Pynchon in the poetic'
by William Logan. _Southwest Review_ 83.4. Dallas: 1998, pp. 424-437.

A very interesting essay on _M&D_, praise and negative comment
delivered in equal portions, examines the way Pynchon's language and
imagery works in quite intricate detail (and reveals in doing so just
how much "poetic" labour went into the novel's composition).

Logan notes in passing, correctly, that Pynchon's "novels of
contemporary life, _Vineland_ and the thinly-mannered _The Crying of
Lot 49_, have been his weakest" (424).
