john irving says we should be more selective as we mature. in his one of his better lectures, Nabokov says something about young readers and the advice given them by a country of old schoolmasters among lovers in one anothers arms. I've been reading 4-5 books at a time for 25 years. sometimes i read the books recommended by the men here. do note that most of the authors on that 169 list are mostly male. i make an effort to include females in my reading. i read the girl with pearl earing. if you are having trouble picking up a book, ulysses may not be the everst you want to climb today. pearl earing is nice little ant hill and so is the year of wonder, so too is kite runner, da vinci code, and so on on down the best seller award winning oprah book club list of fun to read stuff. too easy, to simple, to contrived, low brow ... poorly written ....? yeah, these are all of that, but you can talk plot with complete strangers and while none of these little shore breakers are as thrilling as
riding a hige giant on your boogey board, read five quick ones and your floundering will be over. maybe what you need is a break from reaing? read the cloud atlas at the beach. get a good pair of shades, wear sun screen.

see? your floundering future's lookin brighter already

i read the news today
 oh girl

about a Tellson's man
who dug a grave

the british killers stood their ground
he was just a stray brazilian dog

another not so irish pug,
and now the press can never say if he was of the house of lords
