I tried reading DeLillos _Americana_, but didn't get far. The characters
were all unappealing. I didnt like the writing, but I cant say hes a bad
writer. Just not my taste. It may just be that the subject matter and
style alienated ME. Heres what Publishers Weekly said (from Amazon site):
<<"In search of his roots, a successful but unhappy TV executive takes off
for the heartland of America. This first novel is peopled with characters
alienated not only from one another, but from themselves. It has the smell
of staleness and despair. It is also, with its deadly accurate observations,
its veracious dialogue, and its consistency of view, brilliantly written,">>
I finished _Wind Up Bird Chronicles_ and was ambivalent as I finished it.
The ending was too facile a wrap-up, and many strange metaphysical details
described in earlier events/encounters are just ignored at the end. Im now
reading his _Kafka at the Shore_, and find it better written, but similar in
subject/style. I would call both Postmodern because of the high level of
metaphysical events. But I wonder whether Ill be similarly disappointed
with its ending. I expect intent in all the metaphysics, mirror-images,
symbols, etc. not just passing entertainment.
