This is mixing two meanings of the word "puritan." Where is it written
that the The Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (and to a lesser
extent in the Virginia Colony) were all that sexually squeamish in the
sense of "puritanical" in its modern usage?

For example, see . . .

Pace Hester and Dimmsdale!

Historically the Puritans were religious dissenters--against practices
of the Church of English deemed to be popish. It was puritan in the
sense of purifying.
