Well, as I already said, Arno Schmidt is untranslatable. Well, only very few
fans read him in W.-Germany after the war. In the fifties and sixties, after
he moved several times, Arno Schmidt lived in a small village in Northern
Germany (Bargfeld), where his wife was forced to collect chestnuts in the forest
for survival. In the mid-70th's, Reemstma gave him 500.000 Deutschmarks as a
gift. Schmidt died on a heart attack in 1979.
