The mathematical parable has no "end(s)".

That would make the German translation a
paradox, but maybe not: The mathematical
parabola- the ideal parabola- can be conceived
of in the mind, but never realized; ineffable,
except in the language of mathematics. Still,
contemplating the ideal can be pleasurable.

Which begs the whole question again of the
relationship between pleasure and pain, and,
the mind. Pleasure and pain can be seen as
the width of a spectrum, like a rainbow, whose
length can be extended indefinitely, at least in
the ideal, or the mathematical sense.

Is there a distinction between pleasure and pain
except in the mind? Maybe somewhere beyond
(or over) the present dispensation- a new paradigm.

Perhaps the German translation is in some
ways closer to Pynchon's original.
