Anyone who's ever spent any time in Mexico (outside of the really noxious tourist areas) would understand how Pynchon could love it enough to name one of his characters after it.

An early  commenter (forget who) suggested that that Roger's attack  
on Pointsman and the  Cartel is as unlikely as Mexico invading the U.S.
