NP: Writing question

Is anyone familiar with a "name" that is now given to that type of writing which derives from the abbreviated style of e-mail, instant or text messaging, etc.?  That use of emoticons, abbreviations (LOL, etc.), and other such writing to convey ideas?

I seem to recall reading a reference to that style of writing, with a name given to it (other than "shit," of course).

Anyone?
