So far I've found the writing neither outstanding nor poor.  Since the 
chapters are (so far) either diary or letter forms, there is no outlet for 
deeply complex narratives like those of Pynchon recently posted here by Kai, 
(unless the diary or letter writer were someone like Pynchon).  I get the 
idea that the richness will come from the overlapping of widely different 
period writings, something that demands one keep reading for a while before 
passing judgement.  I'll know more after a few more chapters.
