My work is looking after the mentally ill, based in an outer London suburb. Like any job which no-one else will take the work team is multi-ethnic, multi-religious and the tv is on 24/7. When the bombs went off we all had friends or relatives who worked in central London. The telephone networks were down. We could not find out if our loved ones were allright. Everything got quiet, except for the tv. We made a cup of tea and came to a consensus. Bombers, Blair, Bush, Protesters for us are distant figures, very distant, barely recognisable and then only by their profiles or uniforms. They do not care about our little lives, miserable hopes and dreams, pathetic desire for a regular life, stability. And what can we do? Pull the blankets over our eyes, then, like a child trying to dispell night time terrors, whisper under our breaths,"Dont let them get me.Dont let them get me."
