Great, makes it, for the beginning at least, a lot more convenient looking
for the words I don't know.

The first sentence has, for my taste, poetical value. This could be from a
poem:

"Beyond the Indian hamlet, upon a forlorn strand, I happened
on a trail of recent footprints." (CA 3)

I wonder how long it takes until one is satisfied with the first sentence of
a novel.
