I'll second the recomendation for The Stars My Destination, a.k.a. Tiger Tiger for you Brits. It works as straight sf, but it's also full of over-the-top satirical goodness.

"Basement Christians!!!" (spit)

Besides which, it's the only sf novel I can think of that cops chops from Tristam Shandy.
