I read, write, and edit for a living, and so when I'm not working, I'm shirking. Thank you, Paul and Keith.
The incorrect title does, of course, make sense, even though it is wrong, and the more anthropocentric a person or group is, the more sense it makes. And it makes special sense to racist people, some of whom are not so completely without a sense of science as to believe in Creationism, but instead believe that man, i.e. "the species," did evolve from apes,,, Major Marvy is a fine example.
Warning... Anyone who is such an incapable reader as to believe that what I have written above is in any way racist should hang up their close-reading creds and never try reading anything difficult like a book by any of the Post-Modernists ☺ I shouldn't have to say it, but I've seen it happen before.

The title of the book is _The Origin of Species_.
Putting a 'the' before 'Species' makes no sense.
