Ten Most Harmful Books ...

In the 30's and 40's, the success of Roosevelt's New Deal and Keynesian economics -- combined with the monstrous blossoming of the European right into its fascist endgame -- sent American conservatives scurrying for the shadows. There, the few remaining right-wingers not shamed into admitting the error of their ways gave birth to the modern conservative movement that now threatens the world.
Five books, dubbed "the conservative Pentateuch" by political scholar Ted McAllister, form the core, foundational documents of this movement. All were written during conservatism's mid-century nadir. They were:
1. Richard Weaver's "Ideas Have Consequences"
2. Leo Strauss's "Natural Right and History"
3. Eric Voegelin's "The New Science of Politics"
4. Russell Kirk's "The Conservative Mind"
5. Robert Nisbet's "The Quest for Community"
I'd say that's a good start for any liberal or progressive person's Most Dangerous booklist.
Cheers!

Don't forget The Turner Diaries when making your "most despicable" book list.
That'll be #2 (as in feces)
