AFAIK, it was attacked for the false claims on the Order of Sion and Opus
Dei, and for plagiarizing.
However, the main topic is the Gnostic interpretation of Christ's life and
teachings, which wasn't questioned (see The Gnostic Library on the web).
So, to me, it seems as a 'false' attack to discredit the whole book for some
nonsense, without leaving the most offensive part, for Catholic Church at
least, untouched.
Pure fucking politics.
 
Though the book is nowhere close to Eco's Rose or Pendulum, as an
intellectuel detective story, if there is such category.
