NP re. fake pics and other hoaxes

It's my impression that the list used to be consistently funny and smart and
is not so much any more. My impression of that photo was that it was a joke
that could never have been played on this list ten years ago. My impression
of the alleged Playboy Japan interview . . .
I don't mean to offend any here -- I'm as responsible as anyone -- but once
upon a time when there was no Pynchon on the wind we would write about
books. I think the problem is this: years ago we'd all have been reading
(or rereading) the same ones. Today, with the internet much more wide open,
the diversity on the list makes it harder for us to talk about anything
other than TRP. And, with so much chatter now available, even that seems
sort of used up.
A while ago, someone recommended David Mitchell's CLOUD ATLAS. I'm just
about to start it.
Anyone else?
