I haven't read the Lethem article (is it online?), but it's funny that just 
this past week or so I've been remembering how much the music I listened to 
in my early teens became a part of my "identity" in my own mind back then.  
Certain music was cool, and I felt cool by the very fact that I liked it.  I 
don't think this has completely gone away from me, even now.  But it is much 
less so.  I don't think it's a "crutch" either, just a natural product of 
appreciation.
