Why is this strange? It would be strange and perhaps even pedantic if he
would have done so, don't you think? I don't suggest that this is not
pedantic, but it is at least funny (I didn't read this article, but I
can imagine that it would make one smile of recognition...)
And how did you expect the acknowledgement or apology to be expressed?
In a footnote?
