I am not getting most of the messages posted to the list . But wanted to respond to the dumb essay about cell phones. The fact that technologies are sometimes safe despite criticism should hardly encourage us to trust the techno whiz kids. who gave us thalidomide, Love Canal. Bhopal, The ExxonValdez, depleted uranium weapons, agent orange, DDT, the Ford Explorer, PCBs, a host of deadly drugs, Mad Cow disease, nuclear waste dumped into the ocean in steel cans, Chernobyl, Nagasaki, ... I could go on. We have good historic reasons to be skeptical about the benefits of technology. As for Bekah's remarks, there are many good reasons to doubt the claims of bio-engineering in regard to food production. I am not against scientific research or well designed , sustainable technology, but anyone who thinks this oil based system will last forever is naive. World oil production will peak soon and then will come the shudders of a world running out of gas.
