I have a related issue with my machine in the office: due to firewall 
issues every message sent to pynchon-l gets lost (that's why I send now 
and then something to one person in particular).  The explanation I got 
was that the name 'waste' in combination with '.org' is considered 
insecure, but only when you send something --no problem receiving 
message because the waste server acts as a go-between.
