How about also the fact that both writers use the metaphor of  
"theatre." To Pynchon the evacuation is all theatre, meaning I  
presume that it is only pretend. It is not intended that anyone  
actually be saved. Or perhaps Pynchon means the evacuation is only  
symbolic.  I don't have the Brown book but see if there isn't in it  
the notion that EVERYTHING is symbolic: sex, politics, etc. But  
returning to  Pynchon I think somewhere in Love's Body it says that  
political behavior is theatrical behavior.
