Not necessarily discounting this idea, but it is problematic in that 
Pynchon did decide to refer directly to, and compose fictional scenes 
depicting, the Herero genocide in the Südwest. The letter cited in 
David Seed's book reveals that these scenes are the product of library 
research.

I guess the relative obscurity of that particular historical episode is 
a factor, but Pynchon doesn't seem to have had any qualms about whether 
or not he was qualified to refer to and represent it in detail.
