If 4 distinct parts are discernible in 1,1/1,2, then might each be an
invocation in a different direction (whether physical or mental) like
some people do at the beginning of a ritual?

Different thought: within the fourth division, there are (sort of) 4
divisions: Pirate in the car settling into reminiscence and the 3
adventures...and the whole book has 4 divisions

I guess I'm imposing this pattern, wanting to see a Fibonacci/Golden
Section whorling

another pattern my mind wants to impose, and is quite willing to
overdramatize, is:

1,1 Pirate as the writer connecting to the Muse - maybe even having
memories of previous works (the Adenoid reminds me of Benny Profane,
for some reason)

1,2 Bloat as the writer's workaday consciousness - having to use black
ink and white paper to try to convey the colorful vision; having to
deal with agents and publishers (the Them of a writer's life, perhaps)
whose interest in the vision has ulterior motives; having the duty to
be only part of an imperfect transposing of a vision that was complete
when it came from the Muse.

1,3 Seriously invoking Slothrop (back to that ritual idea) with all
that listed stuff; and there are 4 layers of stuff on the desk too.
At least, I posit 4
p18, ln 9-37
"layers, over a base"
ie - the base isn't technically one of the layers

Layer 1 - introduced as "a scatter" these are small things (bits)
Layer 2 - "a layer" forgotten memoranda, empty ration books
Layer 3 - introduced by ...., but I think it's a separate layer because
it's got some bigger stuff..."Weekly Intelligence Summaries from G-2"
---------- also, I searched on G-2, and found
http://intellit.muskingum.edu/wwii_folder/wwiiusservices_folder/wwiiusarmy.html
-- apparently G2 was Army Signal Intelligence ---
Layer 4 - "News of the World" -- Is this worth a whole layer?

well, okay, I really wanted 4 layers, but 3 would be okay too.
Add the base and you've still got 4. (bits, frames, packets, segments?)

---------------
it's weird, I was talking with a colleague at work tonight and for some
reason the conversation lulled. I looked at the clock, and it was 20
minutes after the hour...
