my first impression is "Ecce Homo" (momentary digression, been trying
to think of a way to deconstruct GR non-homophobically, which is tough
to do since Weissman has obviously got big leanings in the man-love and
even the man-boy-love dept) here he is at last, Slothrop.

The guy who made the mess on the desk, on a "long, idiot chase out to
zero longitude" (20, ln 4) which'd be Greenwich, right?

Anyway, you don't get quite the level of historical buildup for
Slothrop that you would in a Michener novel, but by any other standard
we know Slothrop pretty well by the end of the section.
