Regarding IQ: 

Actually, Kent, I'll correct myself.  IQ is a peculiar
 statistic in that it is determined according to a
median, raw test score.  Therefore, the distribution
based on IQ score is by definition symetrical. 

In most cases, however, an average, in and of itself,
does not impart any information regarding the number
of data points above or below that statistic.

I was being a wiseguy -- too smart by half (whatever
that means).  I shall go back to lurking now.
