The Sadness of America/Intelligent Design (multi-thread)

Due to some recommendation on this list (recently) I'm currently reading 
Richard Power's "Galathea 2.2" (in translation, I admit) and began 
looking for neurobiological news. There was one (in German only) saying 
that the whole concept of "free will" has become dubious, from a 
neurobiologist's point of view:

Zum Thema "Freier Wille unter Neuronenfeuer" lud das Max-Planck-Forum am 
Donnerstag zu einer Debatte über die Frage, was die Ergebnisse der 
Hirnforscher für das Strafrecht bedeuten. Wolf Singer vom 
Max-Planck-Institut für Hirnforschung in Frankfurt diskutierte mit 
Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt, Richterin am Bundesverfassungsgericht.

Ein Mensch könne einen anderen Menschen töten, aber keine Schuld auf 
sich laden, weil der Begriff der Schuld eine Konstruktion sei, sagte 
Singer. Die Erkenntnisse der Neurobiologie ließen keinen anderen Schluss 
zu. Allen Entscheidungen gingen neuronale Prozesse voraus. "Es gibt nur 
einen Zustand, den wir als Entscheidung wahrnehmen. Uns ist, als hätten 
wir etwas gewollt." Schuld und Strafe müssten deswegen entkoppelt 
werden, forderte Singer. Menschen könnten das Pech haben, mit einem 
Gehirn leben zu müssen, das sie in die Lage versetzt, zu töten. Anstatt 
sie zu bestrafen, müsse man sie erziehen und die Gesellschaft vor ihnen 
schützen.
