Beck I like okay just fine, I even spun "Loser" just
to throw a bar full of people a bone last night
(having subjected them to "The Gospel Comes to New
Guinea" by 23 Skiddoo just to show where the bass
sample in Chemical Brothers' "Block Rocking Beats"
comes from), we even at one point started compiling a
"Beck, Not Beck" comp of stuff we thught sounded like
Beck (e.g., The Crystal Ball version of Donovan's
"Trans Love Airways" [a.k.a. "Fat Angel"]). But I
heard The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique again for the
first time in some time @ a coffee shop today, and I
still say, that's the Sgt. Pepper of sampling (even
though I prefer Revovler and/or The White Album). I
don't know where it stands in teh hip-hop canon, I
recall it sold miserably back in the day, but
everybody loves it now, so ... but is Beck a genius?
Maybe Hank Shocklee is, but ...
