sadness of america/bad postmodernism

As a Pre-Archaicist, my only problem with Post-Modernism is the damned name,
it's just absolutely silly that it posited itself as a reaction to
Modernism, instead of grabbing a name of its own. The name dates it to a
period in which there can only be one art, one literature, one what have you
at the top lording it over every other form, as abstract art, for 20 or so
years, did before pop blew the doors wide open for almost anything.
I think of Post-Modernism as multi-referential or encyclopedic; Gaddis,
Pynchon and others fit that bill for me in fiction. The ideal for me is to
be presented with any number, but more than one or two, avenues of possible
pursuit or inquiry. Just wish it had a different name...It makes a really
handy cheap laugh hammer as it is for intellectual bashing.
