GRGR P1S1: This screaming is lasting a long time...

I don't think the screaming across the sky that
overhangs Pirate's dream (and the book) comes from the
same rocket that he sees in the sky after he wakes. 
That one seems to me to have been recently launched
when he sees it. Does anyone know how long a burn
would take before fuel cut-off given the distance?
