Yes, sex/death/shit are such basic human activities and evoke basic human 
emotions.  This is a good point to mention now, as something to keep in 
mind, as when we get farther into the novel and technology plays a more 
prominent role.  Although I'm not a technogeek, I will have to more to add 
wrt technology as we get there.
