Germans getting cold feet about political swing to the right

BERLIN (AFP) - Just over a week before the German election, the majority
for challenger Angela Merkel's favored coalition appeared to be melting
away as Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said the mood for change had been
overestimated.

A poll released Friday by the influential institute Forschungsgruppe
Wahlen for ZDF public television indicated that some Germans appeared to
be getting cold feet about what has looked to be Schroeder's all but
inevitable ouster by Merkel's conservative Christian
Union alliance (CDU/CSU).

The survey, conducted September 6-8 among 1,299 registered voters,
showed that Schroeder's Social Democrats (SPD) had gained two points in
the last week to 34 percent while the CDU/CSU was down two points to 41
percent.

(...)

But the slight shift meant that if the results were repeated on election
day, Merkel would be unable to form her chosen coalition with the
liberal Free Democrats (FDP), who were unchanged in the poll at seven
percent.

Their total of 48 percent would leave them just short of the 48.5
percent necessary for a governing majority.

The only mathematically possible coalitions would then be an unwieldy
alliance of the CDU/CSU and the Social Democrats with Merkel as
chancellor, or the SPD, its current partner the Greens (unchanged at
seven percent this week) and a new alliance of SPD dissidents and
ex-communists called the Left Party (steady at eight percent).

All three parties have ruled out forming such a "red-red-green" government.
