"Then [after _Life of Pi_ by Yann Martel] I read William T.
Vollmann's _13 Stories & 13 Epigraphs_ about the red light
district in San Francisco. It's half-fictive stuff focusing
on the hooker scene and drug abuse. Really hard stuff. It's
been a long time since a text made me wince so painfully."
>From "Ville Valo: Valoa kansalle". Ville Valo [of HIM]
interviewed by Walter de Camp, City-lehti [City Magazine]
16/2005. Translation from Finnish mine.

One can read quite interesting books while writing and
performing awful music selling millions of copies, it seems.
I have only read "You Bright and Risen Angels", so I cannot
say anything about the collection in question. Valo (who as a
teenager worked in his father's porn shop) has read it in the
original language, as nothing by Vollmann has been translated
into Finnish.
