A wilderness overgrown with dope and danger

one thing that concerns me is that these "camps" are run by the mexican drug
cartels (or so we're told) who we all know can be pretty nasty folks to deal
with. Of course, if our gov't got its head out of its ass and enacted some
sort of sane policy w/r/t pot, the drug cartels would lose most of its
business in weed at least.
myabe i'm naive but i'm thinking the goofy growers as defined by Pynchon and
e.g. TC Boyle in Budding Prospects in their novels have been
replaced/co-opted/transformed into some serious bad shit.
