Thaw 
It  has been months since he was out  
to  the yard, since the cold set in. 
He  sniffs at a familiar scent: 
his  brother, gone now, vanished 
with  no explanation he can understand. 
He  looks at me.  I see  questions 
in  his eyes, no answers in mine. 
I  wonder who is smarter.  I do not  know 
enough to know to whom to look. 
We  agree in ignorance, continue, 
each  in our paths, each still sniffing 
the  scents of yesterday, today.
