This is so true.  There's a wonderful fenced-in dog-park in the French 
Quarter (Cabrini Park) that is a real "community" hub, dog-owner's 
community.  Most people who frequent it know all the dog's names, but very 
often not the owners, and I think people prefer it that way.  People can 
casually converse with total "strangers" about each other's dogs (and maybe 
other non-personal topics) with no fear of unwanted intimacy beyond this 
brief encounter, even if those encounters happen regularly.  In fact, if 
someone's personal issues become too prevalent during these meetings, the 
other person is likely to avoid the inappropriately intimate one next time 
in the park.  There are a few "celebrities" who sometime visit the park, but 
usually everyone tries to ignore their "special" status, just allowing them 
to be regular people.  It works well.
