This is so true. There's a wonderful fenced-in dog-park in the French
Quarter (Cabrini Park) that is a real "community" hub, dog-owner's
community. Most people who frequent it know all the dog's names, but very
often not the owners, and I think people prefer it that way. People can
casually converse with total "strangers" about each other's dogs (and maybe
other non-personal topics) with no fear of unwanted intimacy beyond this
brief encounter, even if those encounters happen regularly. In fact, if
someone's personal issues become too prevalent during these meetings, the
other person is likely to avoid the inappropriately intimate one next time
in the park. There are a few "celebrities" who sometime visit the park, but
usually everyone tries to ignore their "special" status, just allowing them
to be regular people. It works well.
