with only a few cribs from Babelfish, here is my gooberhead P-fan attempt:

Eine Rakete ist eine Rakete ist eine Rakete. Sollte man meinen. 

A rocket is a rocket is a rocket.  So one might think.

Aber nein. Die Rakete, so lehrt uns Thomas Pynchons Roman "Die Enden der Parabel", hat einen Geist. 

But no.  The rocket, as Thomas Pynchon's novel GR teaches us, has a soul.

Er ist weiblich und heißt Bianca. Mit ihrem unguten Hang zur Selbstzerstörung hat die Rakete diesen Geist freigesetzt. 

It is feminine and it's named Bianca.  With her (bad urge to self-destruction?) the rocket has set this soul free.

Nun reist er noch sechzig Jahre nach dem ersten Start durch die Zeitgeschichte, auf der Suche nach der Lösung für das Rätsel Rakete. 

Now it travels, 60 years after the first beginning, through the history of the times, in a quest for the solution of the rocket's puzzle.

Dem Geist nämlich, und das ist jetzt nicht ganz einfach, fehlt "das Hirn", dem er entsprang. 

??  From the spirit - and this is now not so simple - mistakes the brain from which it emanated ??
or, "it is seeking (it lacks?) the mind from which it emanated" (the mind of its builders, all the physicists and rocketeers?)

Der Erbauer ist verschwunden, gemeinsam mit all den Kräften und Mächten, die seine Erfindung vorantrieben.

Was bleibt, sind eine Menge Fragen.

Die Antwort, meint Bianca, liegt in Peenemünde auf Usedom, der Geburtsstätte der V2, Hitlers wahnwitziger Wunderwaffe

The answer, thinks Bianca, lies in Peenemunde on Usedom, the birthplace of the V2, Hitler's mad wonder-weapon

Wer diesen abgefahrenen Geistestrip für höheren Unfug hält, sollte die Kultfibel spintisierender Technik-Freaks nicht lesen.

Auch von Robert Bramkamps filmischer Umsetzung sollte er die Finger lassen.

Denn dem postmodernen Geist der Vorlage wird Bramkamp durchaus gerecht. 

Because Bramkamp is fairly faithful to the postmodern spirit of the (Vorlage?)

"Prüfstand 7" ist keine saubere Dokumentation jenes halb geglückten, halb gescheiterten Raketenprogramms der Nazis, das im Endspurt des Zweiten Weltkriegs den Vorsprung durch Technik sichern sollte, sondern eine assoziative Bildmontage auf den Spuren der Rakete, die das Buch gleichsam fortschreibt. 

P7 isn't a clean documentary of the half-successful, half-failed rocket program in which the Nazis at the end of WWII tried to assert their technical supremacy, but instead it's an associative picture-montage of traces of the rocket in the manner of GR,  


Dazu eine ironisch verspielte Dokumentarfiktion, die nicht nur quer durch Deutschland düst, sondern mitten durch Mythos und Wirklichkeit, Faszination und Wahn.

Im Park von Peenemünde kommt Bianca, verkörpert von der Schauspielerin Inga Busch, nicht weiter.

"Hallo", ruft sie in die Rakete. 

"Hello," she calls to the Rocket

"Hier ist nichts drin", antwortet der Mechaniker aus dem hohl tönenden Ausstellungsstück. 

"There's nothing here," answers the mechanic out of the (cavernous echo of the bay under the launch pad?)

Dass der saubere Raketenbauer Wernher von Braun vom schrecklichen Los seiner Zwangsarbeiter wissen musste, ist bekannt. 

It's implied that the fastidious rocket-builder Wernher von Braun must know of the terrible fate of his slave-laborers

Aber was trieb den Mann dazu, sich auf einer einsamen Waldlichtung seiner Schöpfung entgegenzustellen?

But what drove the man to set himself in a lonely clearing near his creation?

 Da zeigt uns Bianca doch lieber ihre "Lieblingsfehlstarts" - und eine Kopie von Fritz Langs utopischem Stummfilm "Frau im Mond". Der deutsche Mythos wird Bild: Hier wurde der Countdown erfunden. 

Then Bianca shows us her "beloved mis-launches" - and a copy of Fritz Langs utopian silent film "Frau im Mond".  The German mythos becomes picture: here is where the countdown was invented.

Als mondsüchtige Filmdiva schlüpft die Historikerin ins Plakat und wittert Verschwörung. Haben Zensoren die verräterischen Baupläne aus dem Film entfernt?

As if moon-longing film divas had slipped a bit of history into posters (?) Did the film also originally have blueprints of the rocket, which would of course have been removed by censors?

Das Rätsel Rakete bleibt im Film ungelöst, wie auch in Pynchons Erzählung, wo Bianca übrigens nur eine Nebenrolle spielt.

The puzzle of the rocket remains unsolved in the film, as in Pynchon's narrative, where Bianca only plays a supporting role.

 Der Griff zum Buch und einige Spielszenen erschließen jedoch die symbolische Dimension der Sache. 

The symbolic dimensions of the thing, though, are opened up (in the grip of) by the treatment in the book and in some of the scenes of the film.

Nach einem Zusammentreffen Biancas mit dem paranoiden Helden Slothrop künden dessen Erektionen vom Start der nächsten Rakete.

After Bianca meets the paranoid hero Slothrop,his erections signal (kuenden?)
the start of the next rocket.
 
Der glänzende Hohlkörper ist also alles zugleich: begehrter weiblicher Körper und Riesenphallus. 

The shining body of the rocket is like totality, completion: a desirable female body but also a giant phallus.

Symbol für den
menschlichen Willen zu Schöpfung und Vernichtung. Hysterisches Zeichen für alles, was nicht zusammengehört und durch den Parabelflug der Rakete für immer miteinander verbunden wird.

Das ist nicht ironisch? Mitnichten, wie schon die Entstehungsgeschichte des Films zeigt. 

Is that ironic or what?  Not at all, as the history of the film shows.

Von Pynchon selbst will Robert Bramkamp die merkwürdige Erlaubnis erwirkt haben, Teile des Romans verfilmen zu dürfen.

Robert Bramkamp wants to receive (noteworthy, unusual) permission to film parts of GR from Pynchon himself (wants to have earned such permission by showing his affinity for the material with P7?)

 Wer den großen Unsichtbaren des Literaturbetriebs kennt, kann das nur für einen seiner schlechten Scherze halten. "No one films Pynchon!" heißt es auch in Hollywood.

For connoisseurs of the great unfilmables in literature, this would seem to be a mere jest.  "No one films Pynchon" is the word in Hollywood.

 Bramkamp, Dozent an der Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen in Babelsberg und offenbar ergebener Fan des Dichters, setzt sich zuweilen sogar dem Vorwurf der Peinlichkeit aus.

Bramkamp, Dozent (Dean?) of the college of film and tv in Babelsberg and frequent devoted fan of poets, is willing to risk embarrasment

 Biancas bohrende Fragerei wirkt mehr als unbeholfen; anstelle seines Vorbilds Alexander Kluge erreicht Bramkamp mit seiner Billig-Ästhetik eher Schlingensiefs Krawallkino. 

Bianca's probing questions are less than helpful; instead of resembling (major filmmaker) Alexander Kluge, Bramkamp reaches only the cheap aesthetic level of earlier "Schlingensiefs Krawallkino" (pejorative?)

Aber das Raketenprinzip des selbstverständlich unverfilmbaren Buches hat Bramkamp begriffen: Mühsam zusammengeführte Teile brechen wieder auseinander, ein Fehlstart kann zum Ziel führen.
Der Geist lebt.

But Bramkamp has grasped the rocket-principle of the (obviously unfilmable) book: by painstakingly gathering broken parts, a failed start can still reach the goal.  The spirit lives.
