that Letter V Again--Belgrade 1941

Hey all--

reading through the companion book to the exhibit The German Army and
Genocide which details using original sources the wehrmacht's complicity in
mass murder on the eastern front.

there are many pics i've never seen before, particularly on German
atrocities in Belgrade in 1941.

many people were hung by lamposts and balconies of which there are many
disturbing photos in the book

there are some of these pictures which include banners or (posters on
buildings) with the letter V prominently displayed next to the swinging
bodies

"V"--das zeichen unseres sieges--german military newspaper July 1941--V, the
sign of our victory. it goes on to say: "the victory of good over chaos, of
the will to build over the destructive elements of Jewry"

letter from german soldier: "our home radio station, from the Belgrade
Propaganda Company, supports the spirit of the capital letter "V". ..each
news rreport begins with Beethoven's 5th as a special 'V' signal. it sounds
beautiful and powerful...don't be shocked if number of executed Communists
or Jews happens to be announced. they are listed daily at the end of the
news.This morning 122 Communists and Jews were executed by us in Belgrade.
You might hear my city, Gr. K. mentioned, too. it is often named."

a new book called The Wehrmacht: Myth and Reality, by Witte has just been
published which I hope to read as well. covers the same theme. (sorta gets
me thinking about the general propaganda regarding the courageous and
compassionate American soldier in Iraq we get bombarded with)
