In spite of these concerns I think Bloom is still on record as liking the
book. Again this is a matter of taste...folks who came of age in the era of
Sonny Chiba (or Quentin Tarantino) might find the ultraviolence of the book
more palatable.
True, 'The Kid' doesn't go through a 30-minute made-for-TV character arc,
but there is one scene in particular toward the end of the book where it was
clear (to me at least) that he's acquired an unexpected capacity for
kindness....but if the Kid has mellowed over the years the world around him
is as cruel as ever, as witnessed by the moment when the Judge returns to
collect his soul. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to aruge the point as
my own copy is on indefinite loan.
