A think that the term "ship" is used for any vessel that floats,  and the term boat is  reserved for submarines.  

BTW: I wasn't in the Navy but most of my supervisor's were. (especially the ones that knew what they were doing).   All the ex-Navy guys were a little anal retentive, but then I was working in various Health Physics departments responsible for monitoring the emissions from Nuclear power plants. Anal retentive is exactly the quality you're looking for in those circumstances....
