My impression is that it was staged.

Jimmy knew that  the lily white stranger with the gun in his case where he
couldn't reach it was not a gunfighter. Toying with his victim, he made him
assume a gunfighter's stance for the draw. Now, let's go...oops my back
hurts. Haw Haw Haw.
