I agree, and I'm sure there's a nickname in the publishing industry for the 
type of author like Pynchon whose books sell steadily over the years, albeit 
slowly (like DeLillo whose works are often taught in hs/college courses) 
rather than those who sell a ton right upon publication, only to peter out 
in sales over the long term (Franzen, anyone?).
