There might be some payoff that does not reveal itself until you're well on your way in the book. The one passage in all of Pynchon's writing that really made me laugh until I was sick (while on a temp job for a second-tier phone company) was the section concerning the Gross Suckling Infant Conference and the puke-fest that results. That joke takes a long, long time to develop and unfold in all its vertiginous, alliterative glory.
I'm beginning to wonder why there is so much prediction of literary disaster here.
". . .It--one must assume and to give it its best shot--is supposed to be humorous. Anybody laugh when they read it? . . ."
