Maybe the participants only half acknowledge the transgendering.

I fully realize of course that it is the narrator who assigned the  
pronouns, not the narratees.

But putting  myself in the writer's position,  how else could I  
achieve the effect?

Assuming I  wanted the two to be lesbians.

Big assumption I suppose, but why worry . . ..
