You know, I've heard a variant of the same story. As I recall, three
authors were sitting around and made a bet among themselves concerning who
could cook up a 'religion' that would generate a profit. Sorta vague on
the details, but I know I read about it in a compilation of stuff by Arthur
C. Clarke; something I read back in the '70s. I never dispose of a book,
so I know it's around here somewhere.... I'll see if I can excavate it.
