I'm reading The Looming Tower, Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11--
One of Bin Laden and Co.'s stated goals was to encourage massive
counter-strikes by the USA in response to terrorist actions perpetuated by
Al Qaeda, so as to gain sympathy for his cause.
These knuckleheads have no political plan/agenda (beyond the naive restoring
the caliphate, pure islam) besides nihilistic suicide martyrdom
ops--unfortunately, we have given Bin Laden, who appears not to be a deep
thinker, a few gifts over the years, the biggest one the fiasco that is iraq
currently.
just as an aside, I think Zarqawi accomplished his mission--spurring on a
low-level civil war b/w shiites and sunnis b/4 he was eliminated.
but only time will tell whether these folks can actually govern beyond the
bombs.
