And we have the question, yet addressed, if the Pynchon "not current  
events" statement is ironic. Why might he have felt inclined to be  
ironic in that way? Perhaps he was just being whimsical and silly?  I  
mean. Come on, it is just so obvious that it is ironic, eh?

Why would a man of his talent be so OBVIOUSLY ironic, huh?
