The Hammer

I have seen
The old gods go
And the new gods come.

Day by day
And year by year
The idols fall
And the idols rise.

Today
I worship the hammer.

—Carl Sandburg (1914)

Back that baby up 100 years to the bitter end of the 2nd great Awakening and what you got is another kind of Christian carnival. Yup, and it's as informal as an American picnic in the park and as indigenous as the buffalo. I'm talkin bout some preacher man what can tell a tall tale with a message so new and shinny that White protestants would be seen standing in the back, yes the back, of the building, some of them taking notes (not all of them men of the cloth). Just like all them brothers on the TV wiping they heads with a white cloth in one hand while they bouncing the good book in another hand and strutting cross the stage like Mick Jagger doing the rooster-fag, hole lot a Black preachers were doing what Harriet Beecher Stowe would do with her good-bad ass novel that started the big war. False religiosity is practically the name of the game in this nation and ain't nobody ever played it better (just as he did any other sport they let him play) than the Old Negro.
