I can think of a few magazine editors and television
producers who would pay well for a current photo of
"the reclusive Thomas Pynchon" and can't imagine any
true Pynchon fan paying a penny.   Pynchonalia
collectors, that's a different story, perhaps,
although the collectors I have known tend to fixate on
acquiring the object of their obsession (specific
editions of his books, etc.) and are happy enough to
leave the man alone.  The photographer who stalked
Pynchon at his son's school was a journalist either on
assignment or on a mission knowing he'd get paid for
the photo and article he would write, if I remember
correctly, somebody else may know more details.
