Yeah, I thought it was pretty bad. I agree with you that it left a slightly
nasty taste in the mouth and seemed relentlessly focused on Pynchon as
'reclusive' celebrity. There were some interesting bits, though not always
interesting in what you could call a good way. On top of this, it was very
amateur in terms of production values, how it was put together, and so on.
Constant repeating footage - often barely relevant - accopmanied by grinding
music, took up way too much running time. I would say that whoever made the
documentary, they needed a lot more 'meat' before they had enough to justify
making the film. They had maybe 10 or, to be generous, 20 percent of the
amount of material they would need to make a worthwhile doc, in my opinion.
And that guy who took the photos of Pynchon, I wanted to thump him almost as
much as TRP probably did.
