She gets put down? By whom? I think she won the Nobel. She certainly deserved to win it. And she has won here way into evey classroom and onto every syllabus in the Nation. She's the best writer in these United States.
What I can't figure out, though, and perhaps you can help me with this, is why Beloved was voted the best novel of the last 25 years. Why is this book the one that gets all the critics and book clubs so excited? Song of Solomon blows it out of the water. Beloved is not even a novel. It has flashes of greatness, but it's simply a modernized slave narrative. Hell, Ishmael Reed done been there and done that a hole lot better (Flight to Canada, 1976).. The ghost-girl doesn't work at all. The celebrated mid-wife scene, where the white girl saves the black woman and her unborn child is the stuff that bad "made for TV movies" are made of. And, and this must be said, even if Toni ain't no Alice Walker, where are the real men in this book? The book spends too much time behind the Princeton podium given lectures at the reader. Also, not sure if the sex up the stair is a parody of gettin one's groove back (Terry McMillan & C0.), but it better be something like that.
